Eduardo Paolozzi, As Is When, 1965
From the National Galleries of Scotland:

In 1962 Paolozzi read a biography of the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein that captured his imagination. An Austrian in British intellectual circles, Wittgenstein was, like Paolozzi, an ‘outsider.’ Both men shared a love of American cinema, comics, aeroplanes, steam engines and mathematics. In this suite of prints Paolozzi marries Wittgenstein’s writings with vivid collage images, some figurative, some abstract. This was the first major suite of Pop prints using commercial screen printing techniques. At the heart of this suite is Paolozzi’s fascination with Wittgenstein’s ideas on the translation of experience: the use of words in relation to object and image in contrast to a language of pictures.
